Our Intermediate and Middle School curriculum focuses on four core subject areas: Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Along with these courses, children participate in technology, art, music, and physical education.
Massillon has selected Pearson's ReadyGEN as its literacy program for our intermediate grades. ReadyGEN is an integrated and well-balanced approach to reading and writing instruction for Grades K-5 classrooms. Authentic texts with modeling and teacher-directed activities drive learning and motivate readers. Students may access ReadyGEN through their school Google accounts.
Our 6th grade students utilize myPerspectives for their reading curriculum. myPerspectives creates a teacher-led, student-centered classroom. The literature gets students excited to read and respond through conversations and writing. The teacher models concepts for the class, then students collaborate in smaller groups on specific tasks. Next, students complete independent work and come back and share their learning. This framework supports and challenges students to become collaborative and self-directed learners.
Math concepts are taught using the spiral curriculum of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s GO MATH. GO MATH is a research-based and field-tested curriculum that focuses on developing children's understandings and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power.
The GO MATH curriculum emphasizes:
- Use of concrete, real-life examples that are meaningful and memorable as an introduction to key mathematical concepts.
- Repeated exposures to mathematical concepts and skills to develop children's ability to recall knowledge from long-term memory.
- Frequent practice of basic computation skills to build mastery of procedures and quick recall of facts, often through games and verbal exercises.
- Use of multiple methods and problem-solving strategies to foster true proficiency and accommodate different learning styles.
Each grade of the GO MATH curriculum is carefully designed to build and expand a student's mathematical proficiency and understanding. Our goal is to build powerful mathematical thinkers.
