As a participant of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP), our menus follow the USDA guidelines to provide nutritionally balanced meals to our students. In effort to be in compliance with the federal guidelines, we are required to offer weekly requirements for whole grains, low fat and fat free milk, meat and meat alternates, fruit, and a variety of vegetables including the following subgroups: red/orange, legumes, dark green, and starchy vegetables. In addition, specific levels of calories, saturated fat, and sodium must be met according to grade level on both a daily and weekly basis. For more information regarding the NSLP and SBP meal patterns and program requirements, please visit Ohio Department of Education.
For breakfast and lunch, offer versus serve is implemented at the Intermediate/Junior High School and at Washington High School. The offer versus serve provision allows students to decline some items that are offered while reducing food waste and encouraging freedom of choice. For breakfast, students must choose at least 3 of the 4 meal components offered, one component must be 0.5 cup of fruit. For lunch, students must choose at least 3 of the 5 meal components offered, one component must be 0.5 cup of fruit or vegetable.
